Blocks or Slices?

Blocks leave room for sculptural designs and deeper shapes. Slices reduce the amount of cutting needed for flatter work. Choose a blank large enough for the finished model, with extra material for shaping and finishing.

Choosing a Carving Grade

Hardness and flexibility affect how a wax cuts and handles. Check the individual grade rather than choosing by colour alone. For a first project, a simple shape makes it easier to practise cutting, filing and refining a surface. See carving tools and ring tubes for other starting options.
