Mallets for jewellery forming, straightening and general bench work, with rawhide, plastic, wooden and rubber heads, plus brass and shot-filled dead-blow options.
Choose the head material, face size and weight to suit your metal, the tool you are striking and the amount of forming required.
Choosing the Right Mallet
Rawhide, plastic and wooden mallets are useful for shaping and straightening jewellery metal where you want to limit surface marking. Rubber mallets provide a more cushioned strike for general forming and adjustment work. The result depends on the metal, the condition of the face and the force used.
Brass mallets provide a heavier strike for tasks such as stamping, dapping and using disc cutters. Select a weight suited to the tool and follow its striking recommendations. Shot-filled dead-blow mallets help reduce rebound for a more controlled blow.
Face Size and Weight
A smaller, lighter mallet is easier to position for detailed work. Larger faces cover a broader area, and heavier heads provide more impact for substantial forming tasks. Compare both the face diameter and the weight when selecting a mallet. Keep the striking face clean and check it for wear before working on finished surfaces.
Tools to Use with Your Mallet
Support flat work on a bench block, or use a suitable ring or bezel mandrel for curved work. For nylon flat, domed and wedge faces, see our soft faced hammers. Browse hammer spare parts for replacement components for compatible models.
